About me

Jorge

I was born in Mozambique but have called the Pacific NW home for many years. I was first introduced to art in high school and at that time it was a fun and easy credit and a way to escape from other mandatory classes. Not having the opportunity to pursue art as a career, I diverted to math and science for the purposes of making a living, but art is what I live for.

My inspiration comes from many places but mostly from my other passion – travelling. My art is about the people and places wrapped in different cultural and social layers. I especially enjoy painting human subjects and seek to convey the complexity of human feelings through my paintings.

This interest and curiosity of the human experience comes from my diverse upbringing. Growing up as a second-generation East Indian in Mozambique, I spent my early life immersed in this diverse Portuguese colony of Southern Africa. When Mozambique became an independent country, the subsequent political and economic instability forced my family to relocate. I spent my adolescent years in neighboring Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) which was a British colony with segregation. The pursuit of higher education forced me to move again; this time to the USA.

In every place I’ve lived and visited I’ve met amazing people who despite their countries political or economic and personal circumstances forge ahead. It is this resilience of human spirit that has always captivated me and what I want to show through each of my paintings.

I am a self-taught, new artist and lately dedicated more time to creating my own art. At the moment my paintings are mostly acrylic on canvas but am experimenting with many new mediums and am excited to see how it all evolves.

 Love and Peace
